Originally published as a series in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, this is a popular account of Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest.
Nordhoff includes plenty of local detail as he arrives at Honolulu and then travels to Hilo, the volcano of Kilauea and Kealakekua Bay. There is also a chapter on the customs and manners of the Hawaiians. On the mainland, Norhoff made a journey through Washington Territory to Victoria on Vancouver Island.
