Francis was the son the rather more famous Frederick Marryat. This is his finely illustrated account of Sir Edward Belcher's 1843-46 voyage on HMS Samarang. The purpose of the voyage was to survey the important ports of Singapore, Borneo, Hong Kong, Macao, the Philippines, Japan and others. This work is distiguished by the author's lithographs.
