Addressing the Bishop and offering to allow him to examine the records of the Scottsboro case in the Embassy noting that they “are probably more complete than any statement of the case that has appeared in the press.” The notorious case of the 9 African-American boys indicted for the rape of two white girls which became a “cause célèbre” with charges of anti-black bias in the courts. Mellon has added a manuscript notation “I wrote (at request of someone in London) to him in a protest, & this is the only reply from the Great Man! A. M.” Mellon was the U. S. Ambassador to Great Britain at this time.
