A major figure in American art, E.A. Abbey (1852-1911) was both illustrator--notably for his pen, and his oil and watercolor, illustrations to Shakespeare--and artist. Among his works are large mural decorations for the Boston Public Library, and for the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg. He was particularly known for his emphasis on authenticity, finally moving to England for greater access to the props and costuming his historical works required.
