As an artist, John La Farge (1835-1910) was highly influential lin the development of American mural-painting, as well as stained glass design--in 1876 he was called upon to decorate Trinity Church, Boston, and among other important commissions did the altarpiece “The Ascension” for the Church of the Ascension, New York. A man of many gifts, he was also the author of such classic works as Considerations on Painting, and The Higher Life in Art.
