An Apology for the Life of Mr. Colley Cibber, Written by Himself. A new edition with notes and supplement by Robert W. Lowe.

London: John C. Nimmo, 1889.

Parkes, R.B. First edition thus, of a work originally published in 1740. With 26 original mezzotint portraits by R.B. Parkes, and 18 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze. 2 vols. 8vo. Handsomely bound in modern 3/4 red morocco, t.e.g., a fine copy. Item #29122

A well illustrated edition of the dramatist's ingenuously frank autobiography and description of the Restoration and early 18th theatre. Cibber (1671-1757) was an actor, and the author of the comedies The Careless Husband, and Love's Last Shift; he was also generally considered one of the worst poets to hold the office of Poet Laureate (which he did for the last 27 years of his life)--it was, he cheerfully admitted, strictly a political appointment for being a good Whig.
