Replying to Hartley's enquiry about her writing and the importance of her education on her writing. She writes that the Feminist Press had just published a memoir of hers which provided alot of the information that he was looking for, regarding college “college is always great if you can afford it. Great for the ‘whole human being.’ But a person can write without it if the soul contains the need, the passion, to write. The ‘I have to write.’ On the other hand high school and college can help enormously with all-round education, with writing technique, and such valuable things as being introduced to masses of fine writers. However I still think the passion to write comes first”.
