Responding to Hartley's query about some biographical details and his education he writes that the “Who's Who” has more up to date biographical information. Concerning the question about the importance of his education he writes “Regarding college and high-school education, who knows? I responded to the first, hated and resisted the second. All the great creative spirits I can think of did very well without it, from Shakespeare and Michelangelo to Beethoven and Dostoevsky. On the other hand Faulkner, with it, does better than Hemingway without. The answer may be: the creative spirit will decide for itself”.
