An imaginary conversation in the style Hurd made popular with his previous work, Moral and Political Dialogues (L., 1759. Hurd (1720-1808) was a literary critic and the editor of the works of William Warburton, his friend and patron, as well as the works of Jeremy Taylor and Abraham Cowley. He eventually was made Bishop of Worcester.

In the rear of the book is a curious remark in a contemporary hand, which begins: " The result of this debate seems to me whether you shall polish the statue before you have perfected it, or after ... "
