Finlay Dun was a noted musician, recalled best for this collection but also noted for the collection of solfeggi that he published in 1829. He spent much of his life in Edinburgh teaching singing, violin and composition.

John Thomson was the composer of three successful operas and many compostions for the piano and violin as well as this work with Finlay Dun.
