Marion Davies (1897-1961), a showgirl from Brooklyn, won the devotion of the William Randolph Hearst, the publishing mogul. She lived with Hearst as his mistress at San Simeon, his castle and ranch in California. Hearst used his influence in publishing to make her a star. He created Cosmopolitan Studios to produce her pictures and thereby set up various opportunities for her to perform in starring roles. She was beautiful and actually a very gifted comedienne, who “never seemed to get a good role, although she enjoyed moderate success from 1917 to 1937…The costume dramas that Hearst favored buried her bubbly talent and probably destroyed her career” (World Almanac Who’s Who of Film). In the years before her move to California, Davies often posed for artists whose work appeared in advertisements and in magazines. She was also quite popular at the salons in New York (her sister had one), where all the important artists and actors of the day gathered.
