Contemporary full dark green morocco, covers gilt with outer Greek key roll, surrounding gilt dentelle border made up of alternating urn and floral tools, covers stamped in gilt with the arms of the Middle Temple, and beneath on front cover “Jerome Knapp Esq. / Treasurer /1789,” spine in seven compartments with raised bands, compartments stamped in gilt with large urn tool and smaller floral tools, marbled endpapers. Covers darkened, some light wear to extremities, New York City Bar Association stamp on the title, accession stamp on verso, in custom blue cloth slipcase and chemise Griffiths 17885; ESTC T81428. Provenance: Jerome Knapp (inscription stamped in gilt on front cover). Item #268203
Knapp (1722-1792) was the Clerk of the Haberdashers' Company, Clerk of the Assize on the Home Circuit in England and made Treasurer of the Middle Temple in 1789 (undoubedtly the occasion for this binding).
