Ralph L. Boyer (1979-1942) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and under William Merritt Chase. He illustrated a number of books for the Derrydale Press of Eugene V. Connett III, who also published the Fathers of American Sport, a series of six aquatint portraits.
