The violently anti-Dreyfusard weekly journal was first published two weeks after Zola's famous “J'accuse...!”. Two of the period's most renowned caricaturists, Caran d'Ache, the nom de plume of Emmanuel Poiré (1858-1909), and Louis-Henri Forain, dit Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931), threw themselves into the fray on the principle that the artist's duty is to engage in public debate.
