William T. Smedley (1858-1920) studied art and engraving at then Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, then in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens, of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian. Today Smedley is best know for his illustrations of Twain's “The Gilded Age” (1899). In 1890 he received the Evans Prize of the American Watercolor Society.
