Titled in red and black. xxx, [ii], 118, [2] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. With A.L.s. from Louise Guiney to the Illustrator. A beautiful and stylish 1896 edition of the Prosper Mérimée novella written in 1845 and the source for Georges Bizet’s opera (1875).

With a tipped-in 3-page autograph letter, signed (“Louise I. Guiney”), to Garrett, Jan. 11, 1893,discussing her memoir of the author, which appears on pp. ix-xxx: “I will set out to do some 21 pages, as readable as I can make them, and of course I will treat Prosper ‘as if I loved him,’ after Walton’s style with his worm …”

With an autograph note signed, describing the printing of the book from Edmund H. Garrett on the title page verso. Garrett also signed each etching as it appears in the book.
