In 1917-18 Masefield undertook his second lecture tour of the United States, on which he frequently addressed American soldiers waiting to be sent to Europe. During the tour he accepted honorary doctorates from both Yale and Harvard, but declined a knighthood from his own Great Britain. Prior to his US visit Masefield had served in the British Red Cross, and published “Gallipoli” (1916), an account of modern warfare, on his return. Dr. Philip Skrainka, a physician from St. Louis who published medical texts, including a broadside on “American medicine after the war,” was likely in dialogue with Masefield concerning the war.
