Manuscript Fragment from Radcliffe’s NOBLE SCIENCE

Manuscript fragment, possiby Autograph, from his THE NOBLE SCIENCE.

[Published in London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1839].

One page, with a small attached note giving the names of those who finished or were first out of the water in the run. 1 vols. 4to. Manuscript Fragment from Radcliffe’s NOBLE SCIENCE. Mounted on old card covers newly lined, enclosed in a modern red morocco-backed box Schwerdt II, p. 122; cf. Biscotti, Six Centuries of Foxhunting, p. 298. Item #263757

The passage represented here in manuscript corresponds to a passage in The Noble Science: A Few General Ideas on Fox-Hunting, Radcliffe’s 1839 classic, at pp. 323-324, “A Biographical Sketch” of Loraine Smith, M.P., artist, and participant in the famed run from Billesdon Coplow to Enderby Warren. The verses are extracts from 'A Hunting Song' to the tune of 'Derry Down' by Bethell Cox, and 'Billesdon Coplow' by the Rev. R. Lowth (here 'South'), followed by the final couplet of the latter poem.
