A genealogical enquiry, reading in part, “The box & Patent are come safe & I am much obliged to you. I have no fault to find in the matter, except with my FATHER. I enclose you 2 Pedigrees which I have just set up as being possibly my Ancestors … I will give you a Carte, not blanche, but 100£ if you will find the Father of MY William of Wanborough by the undoubted evidence of the Documents …”
In the remark that he has no fault to find except with his father, Phillipps is most probably alluding to the delicate question of his own illegitimacy.
