Sumner gives an account of the history of the Alaskan Territory, just recently purchased by Secretary of State William Seward from Russia for $7.2 million. Sumner was a strong exponent of the purchase, and Seward praised his speech. With the second edition of the map, not always present — the first to represent the Alaska Purchase and the first to use the name “Alaska”.
