The original copper plates used to print Dr. Burke's superb series of illustrations to Connett's highly prized work, 'Feathered Game. From a Sporting Journal': Bobwhite Quail, Ruffed Grouse, Pheasant, Woodcock, Snipe, Canada Goose, Black Duck, Canvasback Duck, Widgeon, and Mallard. Included is the original version of a single canvasback, APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED--it was replaced in the book with a pair of these ducks (not present). The images are of such excellence that, in addition to appearing in Feathered Game, they were mounted as front cover vignettes for other Derrydale books: Burton Spiller's Firelight (1937) (Woodcock), Grouse Feathers (1935) (Grouse) and More Grouse Feathers (1938) (Grouse); and Nash Buckingham"s Mark Right (1936) (Bobwhite Quail), Ole Miss (1937) (Canada Goose), and Blood Lines (1938) (Mallard).
With the onset of WWII, the Derrydale Press closed, and these plates became the property of its sales manager, Frank J. Lowe, who went on to publish and sell sporting prints until 1948--but the Feathered Game illustrations were not included, and remain available only in books of the Press. The series comprises one of the high spots of American sporting art.
