Document signed by President Kennedy and Secretary of State Rusk on the date of Robert McNamara’s appointment as Secretary of Defense. McNamara (1916-2009) was the longest serving Secretary of Defense, holding the position from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. McNamara was of course one of the chief architects of the escalation of the Vietnam War, the defining event of American politics and culture of the period.
