John Glover of Penobscot County, Maine, and the 6th Maine Volunteers writes this letter under fire. The 6th Maine had taken 140 casualties in the Spotsylvania on May 10, and then, down to 70 men, lost another 16 at Cold Harbor on June 12. On June 21st the regiment eas staioned before Petersburg, and Glover writes, "Every time they fire a shot it shakes the ground so that its Disturbs my wrtiting a little and just now there a rebel Shot that came near me."
