First edition, first printing with period after "Company" in the imprint, without advertisements at the back and with the illustrated title-page. 1 vols. 8vo. With an autograph letter. Original brown cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, rubbed, chipping to head and tail of spine, top portion of spine damaged, corners frayed, publisher's advertisements on endpapers, some waterdamage WH/9/to endpapers, some light browning of text, with an autograph letter signed tipped to the half-title (some staining, folded), the Paul Bechet copy, with his bookplate (offset on facing page). The autograph letter is actually a letter and a documentation of the letter on the attached page: "The note on the preceding page is, as requested, 'duly signed by 'The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table' who regrets that his carelessness should have given you the trouble of writing" dated Boston October 13 1897, the attached letter is a thank you note.
