Two early works on duelling bound together. The Alciati was first published in Latin as De Singulari Certamine (1543) and appears here in its first Italian edition. The Puteo was first published in Latin in 1518, translated into Italian in 1521, and published in many editions thereafter.
Alciati (1492-1550) was a Milanese lawyer and popular author of emblem books and works on courtly behavior. Puteo’s Duello was one of the most important and popular works of chivalry, duelling, and military law in the 16th century.
