Inscribed on the half-title of vol. I, “Lady Stafford Northcote / Presented with Compts / and Respect of R.H. Horne / London 1877.” Lady Northcote was the wife of Conservative politician Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh.
Horne (1802-1884) was a poet and critic, most noted for his epic poem Orion. He carried on a lengthy correspondence with Elizabeth Barrett Browning from 1839 until her marriage in 1845, and she assisted him in the writing of his volume of essays, A New Spirit of the Age.
