Boxing manual by Jem Mace, Junior, son of Jem Mace, retired champion of the world (1831-1910). The advertisements at front include one for Waite’s School of Arms in Piccadilly where “the author of this book gives lessons in Boxing, under the method herein explained”; the volume can be dated by one of the advertisements at back, where John S. Waite is identified as teacher of the winner at the German Gymnasium Competition, 1889. The Yale copy is described as having original wrappers bound in, while Hartley describes a copy in blue boards. The present copy is in a more durable binding for this practical text: full calf, gilt, with the advertisements as endpapers.
