Delano went to California in 1849.  Known as "Old Block," he was one of the leading humorists of the Gold Rush era.  These letters provide his unique reportage of the overland trip to California, life in the mines, mining camps, and towns.  Kurutz calls this "an important supplement" to Delano's other works.
