Scarce California state document concerning the construction of a breakwater at Wilmington Harbor in Los Angeles. Barton S. Alexander was a member of the Army Corps of Engineers who served in the Civil War, during which he was responsible for the defenses of Washington, D.C. He was later posted to California, where he undertook to survey the state's harbors and suggest improvements as needed. This report is his summary for Wilmington Harbor, with two plans showing the breakwater. The large folding map is a U.S. Coastal Survey of San Pedro Harbor, undertaken by Alexander. A scarce item, with only four copies located in OCLC, at UCLA, UC Berkley, the Huntington, and the Linda Hall Library.
