The COLUMBIAN CENTINEL was a later incarnation of THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, an influential Federalist newspaper, called by some the most enterprising newspaper in the state. The paper's publisher, Benjamin Russell, was a thorough-going Federalist, and made his paper the leading Federalist organ in New England.
