A general work of some limited popularity at the time of issue, cribbed extensively from John Heckewelder's AN ACCOUNT OF THE INDIAN NATIONS... (1819). Contains material on Indian languages including a chapter by Peter S. Duponceau. Buchanan was British Consul to the State of New York, assisted in his compilation by Jarvis and Duponceau. This copy with the ownership inscription of noted bibliographer and Indian linguistics expert Wilberforce Eames.
