Washburne was Secretary of State under Grant for 5 days. he met Grant in Galena and they became fast friends. He also was a strong supporter of Lincoln. He was known for his courage, and met President-elect Abraham Lincoln upon his arrival in Washington, D.C. on February 23, 1861 . He was appointed Secretary of State in President Grant's Cabinet, which he assumed on March 5th, but resigned on March 10th to accept the appointment of Minister to France, serving from 1869 to 1877.
