Illustrated with 39 plates, which show several views and portraits of various luminaries. Title page, confusingly, states "illustrated with 40 portraits, and views" (comma police take note!); list of plates at the end clarifies by numbering William and Mary separately although they share a portrait. Eleven of the engravings are colored by hand. Apparently published in the same year as "Memoirs and travels," but it is unclear which precedes. xii, 414, [xxx] includes a substantial index and one page publisher's ad. Offered for sale (at 3 guineas!) unbound, this copy is in contemporary blue leather, trimmed with gilt- and blind-stamping, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Binding is a bit worn, but more importantly the front cover is completely separated. Owner's signature, otherwise unmarked. Some slight foxing to the interior, which on the whole is clean and crisp.
