Item #248382

Letter to Irene Rodak, at the time working on her Masters of Education at the University of Buffalo, apologizing for the delay in returning a questionnaire (included here) on the role of foreign language in Bunche’s work. The first question asks, “How have you used a foreign language in your work? (This is in reference to the work involved receiving the Nobel Prize)” to which Bunche replies, “Only moderately, and this mainly involving a speaking knowledge of French.” Bunche (1903 (?)-1971), Under Secretary of the United Nations at the time of this letter, was involved in the founding of the UN and was the first person of color to receive the Nobel Prize, for his work in mediating the Arab-Israeli conflict.
