Fanny Trollope's sixteenth novel — a melodramatic story of seduction, betrayal and infanticide. The novel served as a pointed critique of the 1834 Bastardy Clause, which absolved men of any financial responsibility towards children fathered out of wedlock. Public outcry provoked by the book led the law's repeal.
