Charles Lanman (1819-1895) trained under Asher B. Durand and at 28 became an elected associate of the National Academy of Design in 1846.

Lanman made sketching trips to every state east of the Rockies, many of which were published in American magazines. Washington Irving called him "the picturesque explorer of the United States"
