John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) was born into a celebrated theatrical family, which included Fanny Kemble, Charles Kemble, and Sarah Siddons; he seemed destined to be an actor, and did so, becoming one of the best and most famous of his generation; he later became a manager, and engaged in several picturesque controversies. He knew everybody in the theatre worth knowing, and his story, abundantly illustrated by portraits of many friends and colleagues, gives an inside glimpse of the English stage at one of its most significant periods of development.
