Needless to say, contemporary Americans were not amused, and the resulting international rancor alone would be sufficient to place it among classic American travels. But if the tone of Mrs. Trollope's book, called by Streeter "a minor classic of looking down one's nose," does rankle, even the most hypersensitive of Americans can't help but chuckle aloud at the hilarious and rollicking Rowlandsonesque illustrations which accompany her schoolmarmish musings.
