Excellent copy of this whaling classic, greatly admired by Kipling, and the author's first book. "Bullen describes a violent cyclone at sea, gives extremely detailed accounts of the extraction of whale oil from blubber, and recounts the death-struggles between a whale and a giant squid. The book ranks next to Melville's Moby dick among the classics works on whaling" (Hill). The Cachalot called in at the Cocos Islands, Honolulu, New Zealand and Tonga.
Laid in is a 2-page ALS from Bullen to Miss Lister. Written on Author's Club stationery, dated April 8, 1911, he apologizes for being unable to convey copies of another book, SEA PURITANS, and thanking her for her hospitality.
