Walter Wellman (1858 -1934) was an American journalist, explorer, aeronaut, founder of the Cincinnati Evening Post in 1879, and after 1884 became the Washington correspondent for the Chicago Herald, and then the Times-Herald. Here, he submits his manuscript to an editor:

" ... You will find herewith manuscript and photographs for the next installments. Possibly there will be time enough to have one of your artists make a spirited sketch of an incident described in the first part of the story - my adventure in the ice ... "

Wellman's "adventures in ice" probably refers to one of his two unsuccessful overland expeditions to the North Pole, in 1893 and 1898. Wellman became convinced by his adventures that the surest way to the Pole was by airship, and he subsequently organized three such pioneering expeditions.
