Alden was active in the 1860's and 1870's with studios in Springfield, MA and Providence, RI. Here he captures members of the Morton family, in fine dress; they are most likely on holiday enjoying Saratoga's races and spas.
Iron was an unusual medium for the stereograph and is accordingly rare today. "The ferrotype [tintype] is the rarest form of stereograph" (Darrah, p. 16). A charming record of 19th century souvenir photography, complete with the original owner's wallet case.
