Donizetti died 17 years before Lincoln, having gone mad from syphilis. His Funeral March gained a measure of recognition in America after it was performed during Lincoln's funeral ceremonies. It is a heavy, solemn piece in a minor, with droning octaves in the bass, a haunting chromatic figure in the middle register, and a lyrical upper voice.
