Reading in part: “ I have a good anecdote for you. Bishop Doane has written me a letter 'would you do me the favour to ask Mr. [Asher B.] Durand [1796-1886] to panel a landscape for me.'” Duyckink, editor and publisher, was the leading arbiter of literary taste in antebellum New York. He assisted Poe in publication of his Tales and was a close friend and publisher of Herman Melville.
