Captain Pennell-Elmhirst (1845-1916), a notable sportsman and, notes Higginson, who knew him, "a most charming, quiet, unassuming man" wrote a number of books dealing with sport in the hunting field, among them The Hunting Countries of England, The Cream of Leicestershire, The Best Season on Record, Foxhound, Forest and Prarie, and The Best of the Fun. Many of these accounts were selected and republished from "The Field", where he wrote under the pen-name "Brooksby."
