Grant believed the Nestorians to be one of the lost tribes of Israel, and met them at Urmiah, in Turkey, after a difficult journey in 1839, where he studied their ways and beliefs. Following a return to America, he returned as a missionary to the Nestorians, and attempted to persuade them to negotiate with the Turks to preserve their independence. They refused, and in 1843, 10,000 were massacred. Grant escaped, and prior to his death in 1844 worked to improve the conditions of the survivors.
