Jane and Charles Engelhard were close friends of LBJ and accompanied the President on a world tour in December 1967. Valenti writes “The Engelhards were longtime chums of the president and he liked to be with them. They were personal friends of Prime Minister Holt and ostensibly they were only to be with the president at Holt’s funeral, no more. But abruptly, the president insisted they go the full distance of the journey. The Engelhards, slightly overcome, assented … it was Jane who was the heroine of the journey …”.
