The only “signed and limited edition” of a book by Stephen Crane, the Lanthorn Book was issued for members of the Lanthorn Club on William Street in New York. It contains the story “The Wise Men” which was collected in “The Open Boat” in the same year. No priority has been established (according to Blanck) because it is not known in what month the Lanthorn book was published.
According to Starrett it was the intention of the Club to have each contributor sign his piece and he writes: “but it is asserted that only between ten and fifteen copies” were signed by Crane. This theory has lately been disproven in that a much larger number of copies examined contain Crane’s signature.
