In 1797, Napoleon's armies re-conquered Mainz (Mayence), and declared it the capital of the newly created Department of Mont-Tonnerre (the French rule ended in 1814, after the defeat of Napoleon). Here the mayor announces excitedly to his citizens the first visit of the Emperor: " ... let us await his arrival like children who await a beloved father whom they will meet for the first time ... "
