With an introduction by Skinner, editor of the American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine , among others, and collaborator with William Youatt on The Horse, which he promotes in his introduction as being "much more historical and elaborate" while acknowledging that Clater's work, limited to diseaces and cures, "is so much smaller and cheaper". At the time Clater's work had gone into 28 English editions, having been first published in 1783.
