Elizabeth Hitchener was the mistress of a school at Hurstpierpoint whom Shelley encountered in 1811. She held liberal views for the day and in his early correspondence he attempted to sway her religious views. They corresponded, discovering a pleasure in their letters, she was invited to join the household which she did, resulting in a falling off of their friendship.
